Fail Faster

Fail Faster

Like I suspect many of you are, I’m also a very big fan of almost all the work coming out of the Extra Credits team on YouTube.

For the past 7 or 8 years I’ve been watching their shows, I’ve learned about all facets of game design and the games industry, and even picked up a few history lessons and sci-fi recommendations along the way. It’s all highly recommended for any aspiring game developers, history buffs, or sci-fi nerds out there.

However, if there were only one episode I could recommend to you, it would be this one: Fail Faster – A Mantra for Creative Thinkers.

Every time I sit down to reflect on LBO, I do it through the lens of the “fail faster” mindset explained in this video. Heck, if it weren’t for the video, I’m not sure I would have even taken the first steps to get LBO started. Fear of making mistakes, the desire to make sure everything is perfect, all of this can halt your project (creative, business, or otherwise) before you even get a chance to try it. However, understanding that we all make mistakes and understanding that we have to make them, learn from them, and use what we learn to build a better product is what the “fail faster” mindset teaches us to do.

I’d like to expand on this, but I don’t know that I’ve got my thoughts entirely sorted out (or if I even have much more insightful commentary to add). In the meantime, I highly recommend anyone reading this take the four minutes out of your day to give the video linked above a quick viewing, and then start failing at whatever it is you wish to pursue.
